# Batavia This Week — Senior & Care Circle edition
**Mums, Shared Tables, and a Mystery Card**
Week of September 7 – September 13, 2026 · ~824 words · ~5.5 min read aloud

Since nineteen eleven, Batavia Moose Lodge number six eighty-two has been doing one plain, useful thing: gathering neighbors around shared tables. Fish fries. Scholarships. A membership that runs through generations of local families. More than a hundred years on, they're still setting those tables. Welcome to Batavia This Week, the Senior and Care Circle edition.

That's the thread this week. Tables set, flowers sold, doors held open. Most of it happens in daylight, and most of it is easy to walk into on your own terms.

We start on Monday. The Family Fish Fry Lunch at the Batavia Moose Lodge begins at noon. No price listed, so ask when you arrive. If Monday doesn't suit you, they do it again on Friday at noon, and there's an evening fish fry Monday at five if you'd rather eat later. It's a lunch, not an event. Nobody's asking you to sign up for anything.

On Tuesday morning, the Batavia Rotary Club meets at eight at Apple Villa, nineteen sixty-one West Wilson. This week the speaker is Patti Lackman, on memories of nine eleven. Rotary meets there every Tuesday at eight, all year, and the work they do in between meetings is the quiet kind — delivering meals, awarding grants, tending pollinator gardens. If you've never sat in on one, a morning with a speaker is an easy first visit. No price listed.

Wednesday belongs to the Men's Bible Breakfast, hosted by Batavia United Methodist Church. It meets at the Exquisite Skillet Restaurant, twelve fifty North Farnsworth Avenue, over in Aurora. The listing doesn't give a start time or a price, so check with the church before you drive. Worth knowing it exists, though. A standing breakfast with the same faces every week is one of the more durable things a person can have on the calendar.

Thursday is the busiest morning of the week, and both things happening are worth your time.

At nine in the morning, the Elderday Center holds its annual mum sale. That's at Elderday Center-Central, three twenty-eight West Wilson Street here in Batavia, and also at their North location on Parkway Avenue in Elgin. Elderday runs structured days for seniors living with dementia — memory care, exercise, nutrition, caregiver support, all under registered nurse oversight. The mums are the front door. Buying a pot for the porch is a small thing that holds up a large thing.

Then at eleven, Covenant Living at the Holmstad hosts a Discovery Luncheon at seven hundred West Fabyan Parkway. The Holmstad sits on thirty-eight wooded acres and offers a full continuum — independent living through memory care and skilled nursing — so that when needs change, neighbors don't have to leave the place they've made home. A discovery event is exactly what it sounds like. Lunch, a look around, and your questions answered. Bring an adult child if you've been meaning to have the conversation and haven't found the moment. No price listed.

Friday afternoon, Elderday opens its doors. The Elderday Open House starts at two, at both the Batavia and Elgin locations, and it's free. Live entertainment follows at three, also free. It runs alongside the mum sale, so you can see the place, hear some music, and pick up your flowers in one trip. If you're a caregiver who's been curious about adult day programs but hasn't wanted to make a phone call, an open house asks nothing of you.

And then Friday night, if you've got the energy or a grandchild to take along. Batavia High School football hosts Lake Park at Bulldog Stadium. Sophomores at four thirty, varsity kickoff at seven. It's Difference Maker Night, and here's the part worth knowing: everyone who walks in the gate gets a free trading card of a mystery Bulldog. The card only says, who is number eighty-nine? He was a Batavia receiver back in the early nineteen-eighties, and he's been on a Bulldog sideline most Friday nights for thirty years since. The card doesn't name him. You scan the code on the back to find out. It's card three of a ten-card set, and right now it's the only one that exists. Students hand them out at the gates. They're expecting two to four thousand people, so come early, get your card, and see if you can guess before the person beside you does. Tickets are through GoFan, and if the evening air isn't for you, it's broadcast on HUDL or on BATV from your own chair.

One more, quietly. Sunday School starts Sunday at nine thirty in the morning at Immanuel Lutheran Church, nine fifty Hart Road, if there's a grandchild in your life who needs a ride.

[beat]

That's the week. Mums on Wilson Street, fish at noon, a door held open on Friday afternoon. The full list is always at bataviail.co. Take good care of yourself, and take somebody with you. This has been Batavia This Week.
