# Batavia This Week — New to Batavia edition **Who Is Number Eighty-Nine?** Week of September 7 – September 13, 2026 · ~777 words · ~5.2 min read aloud --- On Friday night, a few thousand people are going to walk through the gates at Bulldog Stadium, and a student is going to hand each of them a trading card. The card doesn't have a name on it. It just asks a question. Who is number eighty-nine? He's a Batavia receiver from the early nineteen-eighties who never really left, and he's been standing on a Bulldog sideline most Friday nights for thirty years. You scan the code on the back to find out who. Welcome to Batavia This Week, the edition for people who just moved here. Here's the thing about a town like this. The big stuff finds you. The rhythms take longer. So this week, think of the calendar as a map. Same days, same rooms, same people, week after week, and every one of them is easier to walk into than you'd guess. [beat] Start Tuesday morning. The Batavia Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at eight in the morning at Apple Villa on West Wilson. This week Patti Lackman speaks on memories of nine eleven. Rotary here isn't just a breakfast. These are the folks awarding grants, delivering meals, and tending pollinator gardens around town. If you've ever wondered who quietly does things in a small town, it's a room like that one. Tuesday evening, something almost nobody tells a newcomer. Batavia Township is not the same thing as the City of Batavia. The township assesses properties for fair taxation, maintains some of the local roads and bridges, offers general assistance to residents who need a hand, and runs the practical programs for brush, leaves, and recycling. The Township Board meets Tuesday at seven in the evening at the Township Administrative Offices, two oh one Houston Street, Suite three hundred. Go once. You'll understand your tax bill and your leaf pile better than most of your neighbors. [beat] Thursday night is for meeting people without having to introduce yourself. Team Trivia at The Sidecar Supper Club and Beer Garden, twelve North River Street, seven in the evening, free. Go 4 It Entertainment runs six rounds of general trivia with musical hints and toss-up questions, and there are free prizes. The Sidecar is a downtown supper club with scratch-made food and a seasonal beer garden, and it's the kind of place where you can show up with two people and still make a team. [beat] Friday is the fullest day of the week, and you can do all of it. At six in the evening, Water Street Studios opens its doors for Second Fridays in the Arts District. This one is the seventeenth anniversary show. It's free, donations appreciated, and the tradition is that you don't just stand in one gallery. You wander. Neighbors at Kiss the Sky and Warehouse 55 are part of the evening. Water Street has been here since two thousand nine as a nonprofit where kids' Saturday classes and resident artists share the same roof, and a Second Friday is the easiest possible way to see it. Then head to Bulldog Stadium at Batavia High School. Sophomores play at four thirty, varsity kicks off against Lake Park at seven. It's Difference Maker Night, and everyone who walks in the gate gets that trading card. It's card three of a ten-card set, and right now it's the only card that exists. So come early, get one, scan the code, and see if you can guess before the person sitting next to you does. Tickets are through GoFan. They're expecting two to four thousand people, which in Batavia means you will run into someone you know, even if you just got here. [beat] Saturday morning, the Batavia Farmers Market is at one ten North River Street starting at eight in the morning. Look for the Kids Tent. Water Street Studios brings a free family art activity called Water Street in the Wild, and it comes with conversation, which is the real point. Bring the kids, make something, talk to a stranger. That's the market. And Sunday, Immanuel Lutheran Church on Hart Road starts Sunday School at nine thirty in the morning. Classes meet for one hour each Sunday, and registration is open now. Immanuel has been rooted here for generations, with worship, a K through eight school, and children's ministries under one roof. [beat] That's your first map. A morning meeting, a board room, a trivia table, a gallery, a stadium, a market tent, and a Sunday classroom. Pick two. That's how people here go from new to known.
