A community-run pantry and closet offering food, clothing, and dignity to Batavia neighbors in need.
Founded: 1981, by local churches in Batavia to respond to food insecurity.
Structure: A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, largely volunteer-run — about 80% of the work is done by volunteers.
Scale of Service:
Serves over 1,200 individuals (350+ families) each month.
About 35% of clients are children and 12% are seniors.
Volunteer Hours: Around 11,000 volunteer hours per year (~900 hours per month) are needed to operate.
Staffing: Only 1 full-time and 4 part-time staff; the rest of the work is covered by community volunteers.
Operations:
Food Pantry – Clients may shop once per month for food and essentials.
Clothes Closet – Clients may shop twice per month for clothing and small household goods.
Uses a Client Choice model (like a grocery store) to reduce waste and preserve dignity.
Community Support: Partnerships with Aldi, Jewel, Target, Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Fresh Market, Fruitful Yield, and Meijer provide food rescue donations.
Financials & Efficiency: Every $1 donated can be turned into $8 worth of food through buying power with the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
